    Deadly

A word on Derek Underwood, the finest spin bowler in a generation. I remember his unplayable performance on a bread pudding at the Oval in 68, when the spectators dried the outfield with blankets towels and hairdryers.
Was it Boycott who said he had the looks of a choirboy and the ruthlessness of a rat catcher?

Hadn't realised Underwood had a first class century to his name. Made as a 39 year old, batting as a nightwatchman in a championship game that ended as a tie

My only interaction with him came when my club were considering new nets and I was heavily involved. I was working away and one evening my mobile phone rang; it was none other than Derek Underwood, working for a company who installed the surfaces for nets. After a long conversation about our requirements, costs etc, I felt that I had to say that I had enjoyed watching him play over the years. His response? 'You must be an old fogey too, then!'
