Division One, Round 5 (27th to 30th April)
With only two games played this round (why?), runs were down, and so was the run rate: 1217 runs off 394.1 overs = 3.09 runs an over.
Round 5
Under cloudy skies at The Home of Cricket, Middlesex won the toss and decided to bowl. Kent’s Ben Compton hit a half-century (52) and Grant Stewart added 44 but in a disappointing tally of 186 all out, Extras was third highest scorer with 19 (11 of them leg byes). The Middle’s pace attack of Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber each took 4 wickets at fewer than 2.5 an over. The host’s response wasn’t looking that good at 90 for 6 but a good partnership of 75 between Ryan Higgins and Luke Hollman got us back on track. Higgins’ 71 was his fourth half-century in as many games. The Middle finished on 229 all out, Extras’ 21 being the third highest score of the innings.
In Kent’s second innings, 42-year-old Murtagh threw back the years by getting Zak Crawly lbw first ball and repeating the trick with Daniel Bell-Drummond. Ben Compton and Jack Leaning took the score to 104 for 6, but with five batters failing to trouble the scorer and three others not getting into double figures, Kent’s score of 128 was never enough. More importantly, Dial M took 6 wickets for 42, match figures of 10 for 82, and his 1000th Middlesex wickets across all formats. Ethan Bamber took 6 wickets for 70 runs across the match. It took Middlesex 24 runs to notch up the 86 required for the win with only the loss of Mark Stoneman. This was a nice, steady run chase unlike the previous match.
Middlesex (19 pts) beat Kent (3 pts) by nine wickets.
Under cloudy skies at Edgbaston, Surrey won the toss and wasted no time in putting hosts Warwickshire in to bat. Despite a half century from Dan Mousley (55), Warwicks were all out for 150. Surrey’s attack of Kemar Roach, Daniel Worrall and Jordan Clark took 9 wickets between them for 97 runs off 45 runs at 2.16 runs per over. Yikes!
Surrey replied with 281 all out, Jamie Smith’s 88 was the only significant score although it was off 150 balls with nine 4s and two 6s. But that lead of 131 was more than enough by the time Surrey had reduced Warwicks to 141 all out in their second innings. Kemar Roach took 5 wickets for 34 at a relatively expensive 2.62 an over. Needing 10 to win, Surrey scored 16 for 1: the hosts’ opening batter Rob Yates bowling an over for 14 runs including two 6s.
Surrey (19 pts) beat Warwickshire (3 pts) by nine wickets.
